's bringing the northeast once again to its knees. thousands of superstorm sandy victims in new york and in new jersey enduring damaging winds and driving snow and bitter cold temperatures, all in the dark. as of 3:00 this morning, there are close to 700,000 customers in new york and new jersey, who don't have power. that number's rising. more than 1,500 flights have already been canceled, and just when service on the long island rail road was returning to normal, it was again suspended last night. team coverage of this early winter storm. susan candiotti is with us live from asbury park in new jersey. rob marciano is live in staten island, where they are reeling from last week's hurricane. so much damage there, rob. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, soledad. boy, they didn't need this. and we didn't actually expect to be this much snow. we knew there would be some snow, but not to the point where it was piling up. so this is an area where during the height of sandy, the storm surge was up and over my shoulders. so most of these homes, at least their first floor has been wiped

touring hurricane sandy devastation in new york. flying over ravaged neighborhoods in queens, and comforting devastated homeowners, in tents and in the streets of staten island yesterday. the president also assigned a point person for the sandy recovery effort, new yorker sean donovan who is the secretary of the department of housing and urban development. >>> take a look at this dramatic new video just released by the new york and new jersey port authorities. two path train stations under water. look at that. one in jersey city, the other in hoboken. service at both stations remains suspended nearly three weeks after sandy. now nearly all the equipment for signaling and the train equipment was damaged or destroyed. actually missed a classified briefing about the incident, including most republican members of a senate committee investigating the attack. among them senator john mccain, who was one of our producers. pretty tough questions about it yesterday. senator mccain got rather testy. >> i have no comments about my schedule and how i spend my time. i will not further comm

, joe. 11 days since sandy struck, and now new york city and surrounding areas are now having gas rations. every other day you can get gas depending on the last digit of your license plate. this is because of supply and distribution issues. the power is going back on in a lot of those gas stations, but these lines continue. just to give you an example in brooklyn where i live, at 2:00 a.m. when i come to work, it was still a two-hour-long line. people sitting there with gas cans waiting to get it. it's incredible that it continues now almost two weeks since sandy struck. gas rationing because of shortages in new york city. this morning temperatures continue to be very cold on the heels of that nor'easter. the snow is still on the ground. bundle up. windchills in the 20s in new england. even down to the 30s all the way down to washington, d.c. so this is it, though. we're going to start to warm it up in this region of the country. we desperately need it. it's been rough out there. it's going to be in the 50s today instead of the 40s. we should melt a lot of that snow. as we go thro

's been four weeks since superstorm sandy ripped through the northeast. new jersey commuters finally able to take the path trains to lower manhattan again. stations resume service today along the world trade center line. you can see here how floodwaters gushed into the commuter rail stations in new jersey after sandy hit. crews had to remove millions of gallons of water from the tracks and platforms and fix those damaged switching systems. hoboken's path storage had the worst damage. it remains closed. >>> talk about adding insult to injury. the long island power authority slapped its customers with normal electric bills. we are talking about folks who had spent weeks without power due to superstorm sandy. well, the power company acted as if the outages never happened. they charged customers an estimatedrated rate that covered the entire billing cycle. >>> actor morgan freeman is putting his voice behind a new ad. here's what he said. >> freedom, justice, and human dignity have always guided our journey towards a more perfect union. now across our country we are standing together for the

to survive hurricane sandy and was picked out in new jersey and had to tie it up quickly right before the storm hit to protect it from the storm because they didn't want to have to pick out a new tree. it survived, of course, sitting here and it'll be later on this evening. we had a messy day yesterday. wasn't pretty, the airports had problems too. now as we go throughout the day it's cold in the wake of the norm. for the tree lighting it will be chilly. windchill, 32 and we will see the temperature itself somewhere right around 39. as far as the roads go after that little snow and rain yesterday, secondary roads could have a minor issue but later no problems at the airports. no travel issues whatsoever, we'll see highs in the 40s all through the northeast. rest of the country looks chilly. windchills cool seeing them around the rest of the nation especially in the midwest in the teens. even texas a little cold but the big weather story over the next three days if you are traveling to the west coast, you're not going to see typical west coast weather. it is going to be very cold over
